New materials are crucial to future-oriented research and technology. They gain more and more importance and broader significance in the design of novel technologies and technology platforms which themselves are subject to increasing complexity.
Such materials include, in particular, those with lower dimensionality and/or special electronic structures with corresponding states: Weyl and Dirac materials, topological insulators, layered materials, nanowires, quantum dots, or even combinations of these (e.g. moiré systems). All these materials and material systems differ in their electronic structure from classical parabolic and continuous energy bands through extreme energy quantization, helicity and chirality of electrical charge carriers, and/or linear energy bands. These electronic properties qualify such materials (systems) for future technologies and technology platforms that exploit phenomena at the nanoscale, as well as topological and quantum states.
The establishment of such material systems into entirely new technology platforms, as well as their integration into existing semiconductor, information management, and even biotechnology platforms, requires an interdisciplinary approach. This binational WE-Heraeus seminar will bring together experts from the (applied) physical, chemical, and engineering fields focusing on the material systems described above. The grand objective is to discuss and identify the crucial and required pathways, corresponding anticipated challenges and possible solutions, in order to make the extraordinary electronic properties of these material classes technologically disruptive.
