The development of energy storage materials with enhanced capabilities is crucial for next generation mobile communication devices, individual mobility in the future and the transition of the energy landscape towards renewable resources. To address current challenges, such as increased capacity accompanied by reduced dimensions and weight of battery systems, improved charging times and enhanced cycling stability, the fundamental understanding of the underlying processes in the battery on the micro- and nanoscale is essential. In recent years various in-situ and in-operando techniques working on different time and length scales have been developed in order to address such issues.
The aim of the 649. WE-Heraeus-Seminar is to bring together international leading scientists and young investigators presenting recent research on in-situ and in-operando energy materials characterization. The seminar consists of 18 invited talks in six topical sessions including diffraction and absorption techniques, scanning probe microscopy as well as experiments with atomic resolution. Exceptionally, one session is devoted to emerging techniques which show great promise in energy materials research. Additionally, small scale in-operando methods allow for the first time a direct correlation between simulation and experiment which is also addressed.
The oral program is complemented by a poster session representing the diversity in energy materials research. Especially people in an early stage of their career as well as PhD- and master students are encouraged to submit an abstract and attend this seminar. An ideal atmosphere for personal discussions and exchange of ideas is ensured by a limitation of the number of participants and joint activities.
