Life is driven by molecular machines that convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Similarly, active matter autonomously converts energy into the self-propulsion of its microscopic constituents. In both examples, weak forces are generated, transduced, and applied to their environment, leading to complex interactions and the self-organization of soft matter, from the molecular scale to whole organisms. The biophysics, from single molecules to cell mechanics, governs the behavior of such systems. Understanding this complexity at the interface between biology, materials science, and physics requires a thorough theoretical understanding, as well as the ability to measure and apply forces in biological and reconstituted systems. Our goal is to promote the dialogue and advance soft and living matter physics by bringing together leading experts from these intersecting fields.
Topics will include:
• Forces controlling intra- and intermolecular interactions at the single-molecule level, including proteins and molecular motors
• Forces controlling cell and tissue mechanics
• Forces in active matter and colloidal systems
The seminar is open to international participation beyond India and Germany. It will feature overview talks by leading researchers, contributed talks and poster presentations, as well as providing opportunities for informal discussion.
The conference language will be English. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation bears the cost of full-board accommodation for all participants.
