The conservation of angular momentum is a fundamental concept in physics and has also been employed in spin transport and transfer phenomena in solid-state systems. Over the last few years, research has shown that the transformation and transfer of angular momentum between different solid-state entities, such as electrons, magnons (quantized excitations of the magnetic lattice), phonons, and photons, unlock coherent and incoherent coupling phenomena between these (quasi-) particles.

These coupling phenomena enable novel applications ranging from sensing to quantum information processing to more efficient classical computing schemes. In particular, they enable the realization of hybrid concepts that combine, for example, magnetic and non-magnetic materials, to exploit unique functionalities arising from hybrid systems, giving rise to the field of hybrid-tronics.

In this WE-Heraeus seminar, we want to bring together the different scientific communities working on hybrid systems for angular momentum transport and dynamics. Thus, we have identified six research areas that we want to represent in this seminar to facilitate scientific exchange between these different research fields: (i) cavity hybrid systems, (ii) chiral phonons, (iii) magnonics, (iv) electronmagnon coupling, (v) orbitronics, and (vi) altermagnetic spintronics. All fields require new fundamental insights from theory and experiment to push the boundaries towards their ultimate limits. From our perspective, there is substantial overlap between these separate fields, which can jumpstart new developments and novel research ideas.

The conference language will be English. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation bears the cost of full-board accommodation for all participants.
