Metrology and Process Safety for Hydrogen Technologies & Applications

772. WE-Heraeus-Seminar

10 Oct - 13 Oct 2022

Where:

Physikzentrum Bad Honnef

Scientific organizers:

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Maas, KIT Karlsruhe •  Dr. Detlev Markus, PTB Braunschweig •  Prof. Dr. Ravi Fernandes, PTB Braunschweig

This conference brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary research community of experienced and young scientists working in advanced metrology and process safety for hydrogen technologies and applications.

Hydrogen undoubtedly holds the promise as “the energy carrier of the future”, due to its emission reduction potential of greenhouse gases as well as its sustainable production from renewable sources. It offers an immense opportunity for sector coupling through Power-to-Gas conversion be it for mobility or for a wide range of industrial applications.

To optimize hydrogen production and energy conversion processes regarding efficiencies and emissions, ensuring safe operation at the same time, the role of metrology and safety related physicochemical fundamentals become indispensable.

In this context, the goal of the seminar is to bring in experts and young scientists, working in areas of hydrogen production, conversion (thermochemical and electrochemical), utilization and safety engineering to identify the challenges in hydrogen metrology and safety, to discuss state-of–the art measurement techniques, and highlight challenges and research needs in metrology and process safety.

The seminar aims to bring in 15 invited talks from leading experts and seven short presentations in the field as well as poster contributions from students and postdocs, offering enhanced networking and discussion opportunities. Invited presentations on hydrogen, hydrogen based synthetic fuels (e-fuels) and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs) for thermochemical as well as electrochemical conversion processes will be considered for discussions. The seminar will offer a unique platform for an exchange of scientific ideas, progress made so far considering different viewpoints through a panel discussion from industrial stakeholders, national research institutions and universities.
The conference language will be English. The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation covers the cost of full-board accommodation for all participants
